Julia M. Hung

Criminal Defence Lawyer

Julia was born and raised in the beautiful city of Vancouver, BC. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of British Columbia where she double majored in Philosophy and Psychology. She subsequently obtained her Juris Doctor from the UBC Allard School of Law.  Since being called to the bar in 2016, Julia has practiced exclusively in the area of criminal law.  Julia is a seasoned courtroom litigator, having appeared at all levels of court in British Columbia.

Over the course of her career, Julia has successfully defended clients against a wide range of criminal charges including: murder, manslaughter, robbery, firearms offences, drug offences, domestic violence, property offences, and driving/traffic offences. She has significant experience giving legal advice prior to charges being laid, during an arrest, as well as working on helping clients get released on bail. As part of building a thorough defence, Julia has regularly brought challenges arising from improper police conduct and violations of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

In addition, Julia has considerable experience defending sexual assault cases which involve complex pre-trial applications pertaining to the complainant’s prior sexual history as well as the admissibility of private records. Given her experience in this area, Julia has also been retained as complainant’s counsel on these applications to ensure that the complainant’s privacy and dignity are respected.

Julia is a member of the Criminal Defence Advocacy Society (C.D.A.S.) and the Surrey Bar Association (S.B.A.). She is also a member of the Association for Legal Aid Lawyers (A.L.L.) and is currently serving on the Board, as well as the Criminal Tariff Advisory Committee and the AG Consultation Committee.
